Conchita Wurst: The Queen of Austria

The “Queen” of Austria Ms. Conchita Wurst is the winner of the 59th Eurovision Song Contest 2014. 48 years after the first victory of Austria in 1966 with the song "Merci, Chérie" by Udo Jürgens, finally the contest will “travel” back to the most “fairytale” country.  Ms. Conchita gained 290 points from 37 countries, and received 13 “12 points”. The Biggest Event of Europe took place in a former industrial complex, B&W Hallerne, located on the Island of Refshaleøen, the Famous Eurovision Island, in the in the beautiful city of Copenhagen, Denmark. DR and Eurovision gave their best to make a night to remember!
In the glamorous stage of Eurovision 26 countries gave extraordinary performances. But as we know in this competition only one can win, only one makes the difference! This year the most discussed artist was, the one and only, Ms. Conchita Wurst. On the stage of Grand Final she gave the performance of her life and won worthily Eurovision’s Trophy.
Next year Austria will host the 60th Eurovision Song Contest and as Mr. René Berto revealed in the press conference after the Final, Ms. Conchita will be the host of Eurovision 2015. We are sure that Austria with Eurovision will give an unexpected contest. We have a long travel since then, so we can relax and enjoy the “Queen” of Austria again and again through her historical performance.
Few days before the grand finale we had the immense honor to take an interview from the astonishing Ms. Conchita Wurst. Let’s remember our conversation before her victory.

1988, Europe was celebrate the 33rd edition of Eurovision Song Contest, Celine Dion her victory in the competition, and somewhere in the Upper Austria in a town called Gmunden, Neuwirth family celebrate the birth of their son, Tom Neuwirth. Little Tom raised in the Styrian countryside with his family.
With the passing of time Tom knew that he was born to be an artist, his steps led him to graduate from the Graz School of Fashion in 2011, while simultaneously he had already expressed his talent to music and singing. Tom participated in various Austrian TV talent Shows, showing his vocal abilities. But the sleepless artistic “spirit” of Tom was looking for something else, something different, he was searching for his “other half”, and he found it!
In 2011 Tom gave birth to Conchita Wurst, a genius persona that meant to be his alter ego, his artistic creation! Conchita is a bearded Lady, born in the mountain of Colombia, she raised in Germany and her first appearance was in 2011 on the Austrian casting show 'Die große Chance'. She was one of the national contestants for the ESC in 2012, and now she is the Austrian representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

Two hearts beating in the same body, a unique combination that only Tom/Conchita can explain the reason of this existence. The birth of Conchita can be traced back to Tom’s lifelong struggle against discrimination. In response, he created a woman with a beard. As a flamboyant statement. As a catalyst to spark discussions on words like “different” and “normal”. As a megaphone through which he can trumpet his convictions loudly and clearly into the world. Because looks, gender and origin are completely “wurst” – Austrian slang for “irrelevant” – when it comes to the dignity and freedom of the individual. “Only the person counts,” says Tom/Conchita. “Everyone should be allowed to live their lives as they see fit, as long as nobody else suffers for it.”
From the ashes of Tom’s past, Conchita rises like a “Phoenix”. Maybe is the reason that Conchita has chosen the song “Rise like the Phoenix” to represent Austria in Eurovision. This song-masterpiece speaks for the “rebirth” after the “destruction”, for the internal strength to keep on living, breathing and creating everything from zero again and again. The powerful melodic voice of Conchita gives all the sense of music and lyrics, and like another “James Bond Girl” she conquer the heart of audience, wherever she appears.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have the special honor to present you the most glamour, classy and unique presence in Eurovision 2014 Ms. Conchita Wurst.

Ms. Conchita Wurst, before we begin I must say that I feel honored and moved for your astonishing presence in our site, you give us some of your Glamour sense.

So, Ms. Wurst, you are the “ambassadress” of Austrian spirit in all Europe, and not only, in the 59th Eurovision Song Contest. How do you feel as an artist and as a person for this immense responsibility?
Ms. Conchita: Wow ehm, first of all I have to say that I don’t see myself as an ambassadress or someone who has responsibilities, I’m just a lucky artist who got the chance to be part of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a dream come true, but saying that I have to succeed, otherwise it shows that Austria is not good in music, is not the way I think. All of the contestants already won and showed Europe how colorful our musical output is.

Your participation in Eurovision is one of the most discussed in the recent year. The presence of Conchita is not only for the musical part of the contest, behind the “silhouette” is a whole idea, the statement of a “wounded” person from the “arrows” of ignorance. What was your intimate motivations for this “statement”?
Ms. Conchita: It’s because of my teenage years. I had to struggle with discrimination and I decided that I will live my life how I want it. And everybody should feel that way. I want to show everyone that you can achieve anything, not depending on your look. There is more than black and white out there, and we all should accept each other without hate!

The song of Charly Mason, Joey Patulka, Ali Zuckowski, and Julian Maas, “Rise like a Phoenix” is the most astonishing ballad in all history of Eurovision. When I heard you sing it I see my whole life pass in front of my eyes. Your performance is very emotional but simultaneously strong and powerful. How this marvelous song “speak” to your heart?
Ms Conchita: Oh my god, thank you so much! I’m just beyond happy that many people get the string energy which is within this song. I think, as you said, everyone can relate to this message. Going through bad times and growing out as a better and stronger person.

Lots of times Eurovision reminds good or bad moments of our life. What is your special “connection” with this contest?
Ms. Conchita: Happy times, watching the song contest with my mom. Just wonderful memories.

You are a very young Lady, but you have done many things in your carrier. You are multitalented and hard working person. Have you already planned your next steps in your professional life?
Ms. Conchita: Hahaha no not really, I have some ideas but nothing is set at the moment :)

This year Eurovision has lots of ballads, however Greece participates with a dance song, and we know that Ms. Conchita is a “dancing girl”, what do you have to say for the Greek participation?
Ms. Conchita: OMG I’m so in love with the boys! How cute, aren’t they? I really like the song. I was dancing backstage while their performance in London. I have a crush on them, I have to be honest :D

The words are so few to express my feelings for Ms. Conchita Wurst. All I have to say is that Ms. Wurst is the definition for the word “DIVA”. She gained our love, respect and support from the beginning of her “journey” in Eurovision Song Contest.

Thank you for the bottom of our heart for this rare “gift”, this beautiful conversation. We wish all the Best for you and our beloved Austria in the 59th Eurovision Song Contest.
